The Frugal Life - October 2007

A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hello Everyone!

I've been spending a lot of time in the yard since we have decided to surround the back and rear sides of the property with bushes. There is a lot of development going on behind us so we know it's only a matter of time until it hits our back yard. The bushes will grow to 15 feet to block the views and the birds will love having more safety, shelter and nesting places. I have 20 of the 40 bushes in. Our flower gardens hasn't bloomed as much this year since we had that April freeze, but we sure have enjoyed it.

Donna and I are packed and ready to go for our Nature's Sunshine annual convention. That will be a nice break from the planting, but the weather is very nice here right now and Donna would like to stay for the Fall colors and to see our hundreds of mums bloom. They're just about ready to open. We'll only be gone for a week, so both will still be in color when we return. The rest and break from routine will be nice but the best part is that we will get to see dear friends.

If you haven't stopped by the forum lately, then do so. There are numerous new posts and tips that may be just what you are looking for. Remember if you have a frugal question this is a great place to get an answer.

Thanks to our new readers and thank you to all who share this newsletter with others. Your help is invaluable to us.

Frugally yours,
Randal

Critters Forum

1. Hi. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion on what to do with an infestation of ants in my car? At first they were crawling all over the outside of the car, and no matter what we did they would not leave. Now they have migrated to the inside of my car. Any suggestions? I read somewhere else that you could put Ant-rid inside the car, but I am wondering if there is something else I could use inside and outside. Thanks!

I am looking for Christmas gift ideas for my father and step-mother. They are both extremely hard to buy for. Not at all frugal in nature. Any suggestions? Thanks! - Kathey

FRUGAL FINANCES

We had a call a couple months back asking to interview for an article at Bankrate.com on recycling and reusing. Randal turned it over to me and I called the lady back and talked awhile and then emailed her some info based on what she wanted. She had a large amount of people she had contacted so I thought nothing of it. She said it would be out on the site in October if anything was included.

I made a note on my desktop calendar and it popped up today so I checked. She used one of my comments on the first page of the 4 page article so that gave me a giggle. Should drive some traffic to our frugal site which is our #1 referring website to The Herbs Place.

It's actually a really great article with good tips. Here's the link if you have an interest:

Tips and Articles on Do-It-Yourself

Make Your Own Cleaning, Health, Bath and Beauty Products

Essential oil kits allow you to make your own safe non-chemical home and beauty products. Replace the toxic cleaners and household products that can harm you, your children and pets with a Starter Kit. Instructions are in English and Spanish.

We make our own cleaning supplies from Sunshine Concentrate and essential oils. My wife has used this product since 1987 for laundry, soap pumps at the sink, in the shower, cleaning kitchen counters, soaking fruit and veggies to remove pesticides, doing dishes, and more. I use it for washing cars and gardening since it keeps soil wetter longer and holds the nutrients for the plants. Read more about Sunshine Concentrate.

Ways to Save on Gifts, Wrapping and Decorations
by Dr. Charlotte Gorman

1. Limit gift-giving, both in the number of people to whom you give gifts and in the cost of the gifts. Otherwise, you could find yourself spending a disproportionate amount of your income on gift-giving. Other people may enjoy your generosity, but it is you who will have to pay the bills.

2. Always keep an assortment of gifts on hand for gift-giving. Buy gift items when they are on sale (preferably when they are 75 percent or more off) and save them until the appropriate occasions arise. Usually, you will pay much more (probably full price) for gifts if you wait and buy them immediately prior to the times you need them.

There are 25 more ideas on the website.

FRUGAL HOLIDAYS

Planning a Big Family Holiday Dinner

It's that time of year to begin thinking about holidays and how you are going to celebrate them. Here's a question somebody submitted to the forum regarding this topic and she got some great answers from our community of smart people (you! :-).

Question:
Every year we have a dilemma during the holidays who will host what dinner and who will go to what dinner. Parents, in laws, brothers and sisters, etc ... we have lots and lots of family nearby and the count is growing.

This year my sister wants to host Thanksgiving dinner and include everyone at her house this way, she won't have to decline anyone or have to appear at more than one family function. She has the space, but considering the cost in dollars and time, she suggested a Potluck dinner. We are looking for suggestions on how to invite people and suggest what they should bring (so we don't have all salad or all dessert). She says she will make the turkey. We are also looking for suggestions on how to do this with minimal cost (decorations, invitations etc.). The Frugal Life readers are always so clever, I'm hoping for some good ideas. Thanks, Your loyal reader - Stacy

Here are some clues as to where you can discover extra bonus space right in your own home! Read entire article on the website.
