A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hello Frugal Friends!

I'm very excited to announce the launching of our new website. Donna and I have been working on it for a couple of weeks. She's got an eye for the design (and the colors you will surely guess), and I get the techie stuff done. I think we're a good team, but we'll look forward to your comments. Good and bad welcomed! After staring into the details of all of this for weeks, we can easily miss something obvious to you, so please inform us of your thoughts with a return email. With almost 14,000 subscribers, we won't be able to reply, but will be eager to read your emails.

There's a new forum which I launched about a week ago to be sure it was functioning well. Please let me know if you have had any problems. It has a lot of new features that will be helpful to you as you spend time with our Frugal Life community of friends.

We're thinking of adding a blog to the site so we can post news more quickly than the monthly newsletter. PLEASE COMMENT on this. Hit 'reply' and let us know what you think.

Frugally yours,
Gardening Forum

1. Hello everyone:

In the interest of getting rid of the grocery bill, I have begun to get very serious about vegetable gardening.

Last fall I converted a small shop into a greenhouse. This is a wood structure that required some bracing and lots of white paint.

Also late last year I made a long and deep double raised bed and built a greenhouse from scratch on top of the sunken walkway and beds. This structure is made from chain link fence top rail in a standard house configuration with 2 by 4 ends.

This spring I began construction on the third greenhouse for fruits and vegetables, also made of chain link fence top rail. This structure is a quonset hut style with 2 by 4 ends.

My intention is to get rid of the produce bill and feed us all year long by canning, freezing and drying what we don't eat fresh. We are also going to grow and harvest during the off season (late fall through early spring), with little or no additional heat in the greenhouses.

Is anyone else this gung-ho about avoiding the high price of produce and becoming more independent? I'm known to be excessive, but there are probably others that are interested in how they can do something similar with a minimal investment of money.

Sorry about the centering of text. My buttons don't work. Beginners luck I suppose. Clair

Editor's Note:
Please let us know what you think of the new forum. We value your input.
FRUGAL TIPS

Using Aluminum Foil

Do you know how to keep your aluminum foil roll from popping out of the box......Well read on........ I've been using aluminum foil for more years than I care to remember. Great stuff, but sometimes it can be a pain. You know, like when you are in the middle of doing something and you try to pull some foil out and the roll comes out of the box. Then you have to put the roll back in the box and start over. The darn roll always comes out at the wrong time. Well, I would like to share this with you. Yesterday I went to throw out an empty Reynolds foil box and for some reason I turned it and looked at the end of the box. And written on the end of that box, it said, "Press here to lock end". Right there on the end of the box is a tab to lock the roll in place. How long has this little locking tab been there? I then looked at a generic brand of aluminum foil and it had one, too. I then looked at a box of Saran wrap and it had one too! I can't count the number of times the Saran wrap roll has jumped out when I was trying to cover something up. I'm sharing this with my friends that did not know this. I hope I'm not the only person that didn't know about this.
Save 10-15 Percent On Gas

With the ever rising price on gasoline at the pump world wide people need to know everything they can do to lower their costs to run their vehicles. While there are many things one can do, two simple maintenance tips can save you 10-15% on gas costs. They are replacing the air filter and checking the tire pressure to make sure its up to manufacturer's standards. While these seem very simple, they are the two car projects people seldom get to. And they're so easy anyone can do them!
I attempted to remove the indentations left by my furniture with a steam iron and water. I was able to remove the indentations, but now there are stains in every spot that I used the iron. They look like wet spots, but are dry to the touch. I don't know what they could be or how to remove them without making more of a mess. Could the steam have released some past chemical in the carpet? Help?! Thank you. Mary
Financial Privacy

There are more than 8 million new victims of identity theft each year in the U.S. Many of these victims find that crooks have used stolen personal information like Social Security numbers to open new accounts in their victim's name.

A security freeze gives consumers the choice to "freeze" or lock access to their credit file against anyone trying to open up a new account or to get new credit in their name.

When a security freeze is in place at all three major credit bureaus, an identity thief cannot open a new account because the potential creditor or seller of services will not be able to check the credit file. When the consumer is applying for credit, he or she can lift the freeze temporarily using a PIN so legitimate applications for credit or services can be processed.

Recycle Gas BBQ Grill

My hubby came up with a way to recycle our old BBQ gas grill. He removed the grill and the lid, then secured three planks on the top of base.......making a great garden work table, that can be moved anywhere with the wheels that came with grill. I used it today to pot plants........just thought I would share this great idea for your old gas grill. By teatime44
Gnats in the Kitchen

I don't know why but this seems to work and I'm glad it does! I've had a horrible problem with those little gnats that hang around the kitchen. I cleaned eveyr possible surface, didn't keep fruit out, used Clorox wipes... I just don't know what they're still after! Then I read somehwere... mix equal parts of lemon scent dish detergent and apple cider vinegar. Since doing so, I've seen ONE gnat! And it was dead in the cider/soap mixture! IF this is an issue at your house - try it! You'll be amazed! By vlozano
Time Banks For Gardening, Repairs and More
Everybody's got a skill or talent and if we all share, we can bank our time and glean payment by accessing another person's skills for work we need done. It's the same concept as a babysitting club. Somebody's job would be to administrate the plan by keeping track of the hours submitted by each member and notifying members of what they have accrued (maybe with a monthly email?).
This is great for neighborhoods, church groups, women's groups, homeschoolers, and any other group of people. There is even TimeBanking software to make things run smoother. Get more information at TimeBanks USA: www.timebanks.org
1 Tbsp. Flaxseed
1/4 cup of cold water

Grind 1 heaping Tbsp of flax seeds in a blender on the highest setting (or in a coffee grinder then transfer to blender). Add cold water and blend for 2 to 3 minutes until thick. 1/4 cup of Egg Replacer equals 1 egg.
We make our own cleaning supplies from Sunshine Concentrate and essential oils. My wife has used this product since 1987 for laundry, soap pumps at the sink, in the shower, cleaning kitchen counters, soaking fruit and veggies to remove pesticides, doing dishes, and more. I use it for washing cars and gardening since it keeps soil wetter longer and holds the nutrients for the plants.
It's that time of year when insects are busy finding new homes and sources of food and water. Many people have ant problems. Rather than spray your home full of chemicals that affect not only adults, but especially pets and children, you can have a safe alternative with essential oils.

Non-Poisonous Ant Repellant

Put 4 oz. water in a cup-size sprayer bottle. Add the following essential oils and shake before each use. Keep area being invaded by ants sprayed 3-4 times a day until they go elsewhere.
A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our new readers and thank you to all who share this newsletter with others.

We hope this issue finds you well and still interested and excited to live frugally. When we first started our frugal journey our frugal choices were out of necessity. Now we are blessed to not have to live frugally but we choose to because we know the earth has only so many resources. Additionally, our desire is to have the smallest footprint on this world that we can. That is the reason we enjoy creating this ezine because our hope is it will aid you in your frugal journey and help someone you might know start down their own frugal journey too.

Currently, we will continue to send out only the link to the newsletter until we can find some resources to help us create a properly formatted html email.

If the link approach isn't working we've noticed that some people have switched to subscribing by RSS feeds so they have total control over what they choose to read without depending on email.

You might be ready to make the switch yourself. There are many readers to choose from, but I'm sure you'll find something that looks familiar with the choices offered here where you can subscribe to The Frugal Life News by feed.
Take The Sticker Shock Out Of Your Energy Bill

Summer not only brings higher temperatures, it brings higher energy bills. Here are a few smart ways to conserve energy and save money:

• Unplug coffeepots and chargers for electronic devices such as cell phones and MP3 players. They can add 5% to your energy bill.

• Install Energy Star appliances to save as much as $400 per year. You can also receive tax incentives and rebates.

• Buy a flat-screen computer monitor- they use up to one-third of the electricity of conventional screens. (But don't trash your old monitor. Recycle it at Staples!)

• Stay cool this summer by installing a programmable thermostat—it will feel great when you're at home and save money when you're not.
FRUGAL RECIPES

Oriental Cabbage Salad recipe

Here's my fave. I've been eating this daily for the past few months, I just crave it! (Plus, I've lost 15 lbs!!! because I snack on this all the time!)

1 head napa or savoy cabbage
1 package oriental noodle soup (I use Sapporo Ichiban original flavor)
1/4 cup olive oil (or any light salad oil)
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup sliced almonds, lightly toasted

Use a clean, recycled glass bottle with screw top to mix and store the dressing. Pour oil and vinegar into bottle and add the package of soup base from the noodle soup mix. Shake well.

Slice cabbage thinly and place in large bowl. Crumble dry soup noodles over (I leave some big crunchy chunks, too.) Sprinkle with almonds. Dress salad just before serving.

TIP: You can slice cabbage and make dressing ahead of time...I've had good success with storing the sliced cabbage in a clear plastic veggie bag from the grocery store, leaving plenty of air space and closing with a twist tie. This keeps in the fridge this way for about a week and is handy for single servings.
I use it for washing cars and gardening since it keeps soil wetter longer and holds the nutrients for the plants. Reusing Shower Curtains

I haven't found a good shower curtain that will last more than a couple weeks so I buy the "shower stall" vinyl curtain available at Sears. Believe me, it is large enough to cover the space for a full sized bath tub. I pay more money at first, but it lasts through showers and cleanings 2 years or more. When it has seen its last use in the shower, my husband will use it for drop cloths. The same is true for tired vinyl window shades. If he has small paint jobs, he can use the shade as a drop cloth for any of the spray jobs he does.
A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hello Everyone!

Spring is just around the corner. We have a few signs of Spring here in Virginia. Most gardeners have been waiting all winter for Spring to come and are really ready to get out there and dig. For others, deep cleaning, clearing out and organizing comes to mind. Regardless this issue hold many topics relative to Spring and making your life a bit simpler and certainly more frugal.

Thanks for sharing this newsletter with others so we can continue to grow.
1. Wax on Concrete Mantels

Please if anyone can help me. I have a concrete mantel (which I absolutely hate) and I burn candles all the time. some of the wax spilled over and looks like it stained the concrete. I already scraped off the wax, this is what is left over. Any suggestions?
1. 60 And Looking For A New Job But How

I'm 60 years old, moved to the south and looking for a job but finding a lot of discrimination (hidden). I'm signed up with many agencies, have a degree in business and lots of experience and skills, but the few interviews I've had come off with remarks like, "well, you're not a spring chicken..." i don't want to just sit around the house and do nothing. I have a lot of energy, talent and spirit. Anyone have any ideas to help me?
1. Drying Plastic Bags

Does anyone know where I can get a device for drying more than one plastic bag at a time. I saw one with four dowels that had little soft figurines on top so bags would stay open. Does anyone have any other ideas? What do you do? I'm always in a hurry but hate to toss these out. thanks so much!

FRUGAL PEST CONTROL

Donna just spent a few weeks in the rainforest and she had a gecko at her cabin door that she considered her Gecko Angel. There are some huge roaches in Costa Rica and geckos are known to love them. She had 19 days in that cabin room and never saw a roach, but noticed the gecko (who feeds at night like roaches) around her door many times. We're not in favor of taking geckos from the wild, or having pets that you are not prepared to care for, but there are home-bred geckos and they can live happily in your home taking care of more than just roaches. Be sure you learn more about them before you consider this option.

What we've used in the past for roaches is a recipe to make Roach Balls. It worked and has worked for many others we've given it to.

Roach Balls

1/2 cup boric acid (purchased at pharmacy)
2 T. granulated sugar
2 T. chopped onion
2T. shortening
1 teaspoon water (if needed for consistency)

Blend in bowl till consistency like dough. Then roll into balls. Put a ball inside a small paper cup and place where you have roach problem. They eat the balls and carry them back to other roaches. The roaches die providing food for other bugs that eat dead bugs. This recipe will make about 25 balls. You can freeze extras. Be sure to keep out of reach of pets and children.
Making A Porch Bench

Hi everyone, I have some thing I made recently and had many compliments on. A porch bench!! I found 2 old iron dining room chairs in the back yard when I moved. I took off the seats, I painted them white, put the chairs facing each other, cut a piece of plywood the length and width (1/4 inch wider on each side), screwed two 1x4's on each side for the front and back. I got sponge batting and an old sheet to cover the plywood stapled it to the plywood and screwed the plywood to the two chairs from the seats of the chairs. I then went to a garage sale (I love garage sales)! I found a wicker head board for $5 and screwed it to the back of the bench. it was so pretty everyone wanted to know where to get one like it. FRUGAL TIPS

Using Printed Boxes Again

First, I apologize for not posting this prior to the holidays, but that is when I discovered this. I had more packages to mail than I did boxes for them. And it seemed that good sturdy boxes were way too emblazed with graphics or printing. So I took these boxes apart and using the same folds, reconstructed them "inside-out" therefore putting the clean side out and ready for addressing. You can use regular white glue, since you are gluing paper product, but to speed things up, I used an extra tacky glue. The shipping tape then gave it further support anyway. Through the year, I'll simply take apart boxes that I may use next year and reconstruct them as needed. Best part is - I won't have to BUY any (hopefully).
FRUGAL ORGANIZING

With all of the organizational supplies being sold and businesses that are springing up to help people organize, it's obvious we simply have too much stuff. It's impossible to organize if you've got more things than you really have use for. It won't stay organized for long. Maybe an article from our website will help you to know how to get your stuff under control. Here's some topics available:

FRUGAL GARDENING

We all know that vinegar has a hundred uses in the home, but it can be used in the garden also.

Kill Grass and Weeds
Use full strength in any area where you do not want anything to grow. Be careful not to put it on a slope that will cause it to run down into an area that you want things to grow in. This stuff really works, so use it carefully. You can apply it with a spray bottle.

Dirty Planter and Pots
Planters and pots begin to look old and crummy with the salt buildup from watering. Soak the stains in full strength vinegar. You can use a sponge to soak and then to rub off.

Ant Repellent
Full strength vinegar will keep ants from going into the house if you spray around doorways or any opening you know exists. You'll have to reapply at least two times a week, so leave the bottle right inside the door to remind you.

Freshen Your Cut Flowers
Vinegar helps flowers to last longer in the vase. Add about 1 T. to 2 cups of water and also add 1 a pinch of sugar.

FRUGAL PETS

Healthy Pet Foods

1. Blind Slats - Uses For Them?

I've just hung 3 sets of vinyl blinds in my home. After shortening them to the desired length, I'm left with several extra slats that I hate to just toss. Does anybody have any ideas for these? I know I can save a few for replacing slats that get damaged, but not this many! I'm wondering what all of your creative minds can come up with. Thanks!

FRUGAL FINANCES

Spend Intentionally - From Character First Electronic Newsletter

Many individuals cringe at the idea, but a budget can help you develop the financial discipline to succeed.

Track Your Spending Is your money consumed by impulse purchases, credit card bills, or banking fees? Use your credit card statements, receipts, and bills to keep track of every dollar you spend for two months. Calculate your monthly fixed and variable spending. Then calculate your monthly income, and compare numbers.

If your spending exceeds your income, look for places to cut spending. Identify non-essentials such as eating out, hobbies, name- brand coffee, and smoke breaks. Find less expensive alternatives, wait for sales, use coupons, or buy in bulk.

Make A Plan
Allocate money for each expense category. Save at least 10 percent of your income each month. Set aside additional money in order to prepare for unexpected circumstances. Put money aside for college tuition or other large expenses, and avoid heavy debt.

Pay your bills, then determine what you have left for other things. Pay extra on your credit cards until you pay them off; then pay the balance every month. Do not buy something unless you have the money to pay for it.

Cutting expenses does not mean cutting enjoyment. Go to the movies once instead of twice a week. Take advantage of free concerts, kids- eat-free deals, and free day at the zoo. Ride in one car instead of two when possible, and choose the one with better gas mileage.

Stick With It
Adjust your budget categories as necessary, but do not give up on cutting expenses or saving money. A little discipline now will eventually give you the freedom to go on that trip or buy that flat screen television.

Whatever stage of life you are in, using a spending plan now will give you the freedom to seize tomorrow's opportunities unhindered by financial worries.

Inexpensive Floor Make Over

In remodeling our master bed room we decided to paint the plywood floor we couldn't afford to carpet. We filled in the unevenness with bondo. Let cure well. Sealed it with a good primer. Painted it the color of choice & then stenciled roses all around the edges with a 1/4 circle facing the corners & a Hollow heart in each corner of the room. It turns out we liked it better than carpet! And it was a whole lot cheaper!! - wildone777
FRUGAL TIPS

Save Trees and Birds

Take away temptation and save trees and birds since catalogs are being produced by cutting down the boreal forest where our North American birds breed. This website makes canceling catalogs very easy! It was on the Today Show this past week. It is free and secure.
FRUGAL QUOTES

In 1732, Benjamin Franklin founded and published Poor Richard's Almanac, an annual collection of practical information, humorous stories, and wise sayings. Many of these sayings encouraged readers to build habits of diligence and thriftiness.

"He that is rich need not live sparingly, and he that can live sparingly need not be rich."

"Drink water, put the money in your pocket."

"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."

"The way to wealth is as plain as the way to the market. It depends chiefly on two words, industry and frugality; that is, waste neither time nor money, but make the best use of both."

A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our new readers and thank you to all who share this newsletter with others.

Hope your holidays were enjoyable and frugal too. If not, it is never too late to begin again. While the Christmas cards are on your mind please look again at this article on reusing Christmas cards.

Reusing an item is more important than recycling it. So wherever you are, look for opportunities to reuse. Reusing doesn't impact our waste system nor does it usually take new resources to be reused again.

Frugally yours,
Randal
Family

1. Condo Living - Our Neighbors Are Elephants!

We've just moved into a condo and it's our first time in a multi-family dwelling. It's a new construction (high-end materials and top-notch builder) so it's been built with all of the latest materials/methods to help with noise containment.

Unfortunately, just after moving in, we realized that our neighbors in the unit above us have VERY heavy footsteps. Early in the morning to late at night - pounding all over the ceiling. They have a small child that runs around all day and the adult footsteps cause the light fixtures in the ceiling to vibrate. If their unit is similar to ours they will have hardwood floors throughout - which probably isn't helping matters.

We plan to chat with them about it. We've already mentioned it to our head of the HOA. We don't want to alienate our neighbors or hurt their feelings - but we also don't like the thought of living in what sounds like a popcorn popper!

Any suggestions or recommended approaches to this somewhat delicate issue?

1. McCalls Pattern - Help Please

Hoping someone out there can help. I have McCalls Pattern 6868, but I am missing the instruction sheet. This pattern has been out of print for some years now, and I cannot find anything regarding Pattern archives.
Anybody out there sew? My appreciations up front!
FRUGAL HOW-TO

Slash Your Food Bill
By Melissa Gotthardt, AARP Magazine - January & February 2008

Stop paying full price at the checkout line. Everyone's feeling the shock of higher grocery prices these days: you run in to buy a few basics, and $60 later you leave the store wondering where your money went. In fact, grocery bills have risen about 5.7 percent in the past two years.

Get some tips from this article on AARP's website.

FRUGAL DECORATING

I've moved five times in the past 10 years, due to life and job changes. My way of saving money is called "use what you have decorating." I've had the same bedroom drapes and comforter for four of the five places I've lived.Sometimes I use my old things in a new way.

For instance, I had inherited some painted china plates that my Mom had stuck in the back of her china cabinet. You couldn't even see 'em there! I hung them up in the bathroom, of all places! But they made pretty wall decorations and the steam and humidity doesn't affect china plates.

A cedar chest became a behind-the-sofa table. Old kitchen items -- utensils, dishes, pot lids and knick knacks -- were placed on top of the kitchen cabinets in one home, where the cabinets didn't go all the way to the ceiling. They made a cute display.

My nightstand began life as a microwave oven stand back in the 1980s, when microwaves were HUGE; its big table surface provides lots of room for my lamp, alarm clock, glasses and books.

An antique dresser from a third bedroom has been in two large bathrooms, used for storing towels and cosmetics. The curtains in one house has been made into valances for windows elsewhere.

I'm not above dumpster diving, either: I have scrounged stereo speakers, plant stands, shelves, lamps, a Martha Stewart shower curtain, large baskets and chairs from apartment dumpsters. (Everything was in perfect condition. Can't believe my neighbors threw all this good stuff away!)

If you "think outside the box" you can come up with new uses for the things you already own or items you find -- and you can't beat the price; it's all free!

FRUGAL TIPS

Think Percentage Of Savings

When you shop and price comparison doesn't seem worth it, think in terms of percentages.

If a gallon of milk costs $3.75 at one store and $3.25 at another, you save 50 cents by buying the cheaper milk. This might not sound like much, but it's a 13% savings! What if you could do that with your entire food budget? It would stretch a lot further.

When thinking this way don't forget to consider the gas used. You don't want to run to 7 different stores to get your groceries. Your time is worth something also. You'll also have to consider quality.

There's great value in saving pennies. They do add up over time and you establish good frugal habits that will make a difference in other areas of your life also.
