portable propane heating - safety & cost,

(1/1)

Regina, There are small fans that can go into the upper corners of the door openings to the rooms to circulate the heat to where it's cold. Otherwise, be prepared to make a pad for an outside tank and run a copper line and flue pipe.
Unless you get a small catalytic heater, but the LP tank should be outdoors with any setup.

In our area propane is as expensive as electricity.  We use a propane space heater during the day, but not at night or when we are away as it is not vented. When turned off the heater is becomes cold rapidly. Be sure the heater you use is meant for the application you want to use it for.
An airtight woodburner in an area where seasoned wood is readily available is the best heat in my opinion...but then there are air pollution standards in some areas. A woodburner dampered down can hold heat for 8-10 hours. Seek out neighbors who can advise you on woodburning technique, and wood selection.  Good luck!

Greetings All,

I'm very excited to have discovered this group as did a google search re wood stove heating...

Myself and my two children have just moved to a millhouse in central NC.  The season has turned cold -- and I'm struggling keeping the woodburning stove such that it warms the 3 room house consistently.  Admittedly, I havn't quite mastered the process.

I've been using a small electric heater in one room (the coldest)... this is going to be very costly.

So, I'm researching the viability of using a portable propane heater to supplement the wood burning stove.

Please share your knowledge and experience!

Thank you in advance!  -Regina
