Wikipedia has a great story about the history, etc.  the design is from back around 1927

Do a Google search for "icyball" and see the refrigerator that works without electricity. I haven't used one but I have corresponded with someone that has. The ammonia based refrigeration system is basically the same as used in RV gas refrigerators,

In my experience, the biggest problem breaking free of the utilities is refrigeration. Icy ball can be used with any heat source.
