If you want to make this last longer you may want to consider a clear sealant (like Polyurethane). I have used a similar technique on the home of some very good customers of mine to great success. You can also make good counter-tops out of mdf which is painted then sealed.

In remodling our master bed room we decided tp paint the
plywood floor we could't afford to carpet.
We filled in the unevenness with bondo. Let cure well.
Sealed it with a good primer.
Painted it the color of choice & then stenciled roses all around the edges with a 1/4 circle facing the corners & a
Hollow heart 1 in each corner of the room.
 It turns out we liked it better then carpet! And it was a whole lot cheaper!!
