Please help.  Our house and yard are infested with small ants.  Everytime we spray, the ants simply go to another place.  Apparently, our entire yard (about a half of an acre) is full of ant hills.  Does anyone know what we can treat the yard with that is safe for people?  We have four children, ages 10 and under, who play in the yard all of the time and we do not want to put anything down that will harm them in anyway.  Also, what can we put in the house that safe?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.

There is a website that I found that offers stream-freindly lawn care tips… on this site there is a recipe for organic insect control….  :)

        goto   http://www.cleanwaterservices.org

under “I want to to my part” click on “Clean Water Starts at Your Home”

them clink on “Stream-Friendly Home and Yard Care”

on the bottom of the page are some great recipes..

Using tobacco for pest repelant works great… but from what I’ve read you do not want to use it around food..

        Good Luck

I can sympathize.  Sounds like you live in a sandy area. THIS SUGGESTION IS NOT – REPEAT NOT – CHILD OR ANIMAL SAFE, but you may want to try a Green Cross products called Ant-b-gone.  Put a few drops on a small plastic or metal square or disc of somekind (a cut-out from a foil pie plate for example) and put it close to the ant hill and ant trails.  The ants love this sticky liquid, get it on their feet and take it back to the main nest.
YOU WILL NEED TO EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN to stay away from these baits.  That is the downside, but the upside is that it should work this Spring and you’ll have a clean yard for Summer.  Good luck.

I am also having a major ant problem. I have read all of the great information on the site. I tried the cinnamon, bay leaves, cloves, cayenne and black pepper but these ants are troopers and they just filed over the mounds one by one. However the vinegar did stop them in their tracks, well at least for now.

The problem I am having is that I live in a craftsman house with a crawl space. I am temporarly able to stop the ants at one entrance but they just find another way in, then another, then another. I just can’t keep up with them, they are inside the walls and under the house which I have no access to.

Please help. I am off for vacation in 48 hours so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

              Thank you.

What kind of ants do you have?  Carpenter ants help breakdown dying trees.  Sugar ants like to invade your house.  I use diatamacous earth outside and you can also use cayenne pepper if they are entering your kitchen someplace.

WE HAVE ANTS IN THE CLOSET, HUNDREDS OF THEM.  ALSO WE HAVE THEM IN THE BATHROOM, HUNDREDS OF THEM, THEY ARE EVERYWHERE IN THE BATHROOM, ON THE FLOOR AND WALL AND THE TUB. ABSOLUTELY NONE IN THE KITCHEN!!! OH YES,ALSO ANTS IN THE BED, AND COMPUTER KEYBOARD. ALL KINDS OF THEM.  BLACK, BROWN AND TINY BITING RED ANTS. I CAN UNDERSTAND IN THE KITCHEN, BUT ALL THESE OTHER PLACES? THE BATHTUB IS JUST FULL OF THEM, COMING OUT OF THE FAUCET, THE WALLS. I CAN’T FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT WHY THEY ARE COMING IN THESE PLACES. ANY IDEAS?

I have a large colony of black ants in my back yard. Its is about 4'x8' and the ground is like a sponge. They have killed the grass where the colony is so I'm not worried about a dead spot in the grass. Any suggestions as to what I can do will be appreciated. Thanks Tim

There's a lot of content on the site about ants.  Search for the word ANTS on the home page of the website:  http://www.thefrugallife.com

I tried the  powder cinnamon remedy/deterent for ants and it worked great!!!  It worked so well I sprinkled outside near the front and back doors.  However, I just found out that cinnamon is what some hunters swear by to attract bears, and we also have a major bear problem around here. A bear family comes near the homes around here every night.  I guess I will be spraying off the areas here shortly.  So folks, be careful about what deterent you use if you live in areas where there are bears.

The best thing I tried is Armour All! It works! They don't like the slippery surface and it makes your counter shiny! And is non toxic and no smell.
