I have to share this, because for almost a year I’ve tried several things to try to get rid of ants. It was frustrating, because you would find them in cereal that costed over $3.00 a box and I had to throw the almost brand new cereal away. I had to eventually put sweetened cereal in gallon size ziploc bags. They were really getting to be a nuisance. I bought a gallon of the Home Defense and a 20 lb bag of the Ortho granules from the garden section at Wal-Mart. I thoroughly sprayed outside our home around the foundation and afterwards spread the granules from the foundation to 12-18″ from the foundation. I also sprayed inside around all the base boards and from the floor to the ceiling in all the corners………THE RESULTS!!! NO MORE ANTS!!! PRAISE GOD!!! It has been over 2 months and we have no more ants.
That seems rather drastic for ants since there’s been a lot of information out there on non-toxic ways to get rid of them. Here’s a few links:

To spray that much poison around and in a home is not common with all the information on the dangers of pesticides. You can get safety data sheets on specific products here:
I know a pest problem is distressful for sure and I don’t mean to make you feel bad … we’ve had ant problems many times, but I’ve never been able to buy any of that stuff because I read the labels before I got to the checkout. We’ve always had pets or children around the house also, so it’s not an option.
I grew up with the generation that thought chemicals were miracles … but now we’re finding out what they are doing to our lives, water supplies and the birds and wildlife in it also.
Eventually those poisons will “wear off” so I hope you find another solution for the next time :-)
My mom had a problem with ants in her family room. I put used coffee grounds outside around that room and no more ants.
For inside the house I use boric acid powder. You can use it as a powder or add water and apply it as a liquid. Ants also do not like powder of any kind or spearmint gum or bay leaves.
