I believe in the ‘live catch’ mice traps and relocating them across a river or 3 miles away. Putting cornmeal into cement sounds as if this is a horrible way to kill part of nature. Plug up your holes inside and outside the house. Put up steel flashings around your roof or under your vinyl siding. Mice cannot climb on something slippery. Do as apartment dwellers do, but edibles in glass or plastic container. Wipe down your kitchen every night after putting away all edibles, especially peanut butter and chocolate and then take the household trash outside and place into a tight lidded garbage can.. If you have just handled food, wash your hands before opening drawers or paying your bills. Mice have a great sense of smell. Mice are attarcted to the ‘urine trail’ of other mice which are yellowish in color depending on the surface. These trails need to be washed down with soap and water.

All small mammals (mice included) have small territories and short life spans, thus if you take a mouse far away from it’s territory (the area it was born in) it can’t find food and/or is invading another animal’s territory. Basically, you’re kidding yourself if you think that you’re being “humane” by taking an animal out of the area where it knows where food/water/shelter are and dumping it somewhere else–it’s going to starve or be eaten. Plus, these are mostly house mice (Mus musculus) not Paramyscus spp., so they are not meant to live in the woods, they live in houses, barns, industrial areas etc. Mus musculus (the common house mouse) is NOT native to North America (it was brought here by Europeans) thus doesn’t belong here anyway, so releasing it “back into the wild” is completely ridiculous. There’s nothing humane about catching and releasing it, you’re just sentencing it to a slow death. Just get over yourself and buy some snap traps.

ok… so apparently cotton balls with several drops of PEPPERMINT OIL in them are effective… and filling in any holes with STEEL WOOL (it’s too tough for them to chew through)… peppermint plants as well as the cotton balls at entrances are good… so is putting kitty litter by the entrances of your house… again, they don’t have to stink… it’s just the faint scent of cats that keeps them away… so yeah, my housemate and I are putting those into action… here’s hoping *fingers crossed*

i live in a very remote area… we have no stores and get everything flown into us. Anyways the other night when we heard mice as we were about to go to sleep we made a quick trap. We stuck a bucket with a few inches of water in the bottom. we smeared some peanut butter around the inside lip of the bucket and gave it a little ramp w/ a piece of lumber (nothing fancy at all really but it worked!!). One night and 8 dead and gone so far.
