If the only reason you still have land-line service from the local telephone company is in case you need to make an emergency call to 911, then you may be surprised to discover that when the telephone company disconnects residential service, the line is not totally disconnected. After disconnection, emergency calls and calls to the phone company’s customer service line on 611 may still be placed at no charge.

We dumped our regular telephone service (major carrier and major price) and went with Magic Jack. We pay for a year at a time but that breaks down to $6 a month. That also includes unlimited long distance with the US. We still have 911 features but our operator is automated. We are saving big every month. The bill went from over $30 a month to just $6.
