My mother-in-law is making my wedding dress, but she used the wrong satin and it's very stiff. There's a delicate lace overlay appliqued to the satin. What can I do to soften the satin without ruining any of the material? I'm hoping to have more movement rather than structure. Thanks!

Sometimes satin has chemical stabilizers  in it to make it easier to work with.

To test your particular piece of fabric, take a 4″ square scrap and either serge the edge or otherwise stitch around the square to keep it from fraying.
Hand-wash it in mild soap and blow dry it with your hairdryer on a low setting.

The answer will be in your hands!

Hope this helps – good luck!  ;D

Thanks for this idea for the satin.  I am sure the bride-to-be will let us know what happens.

This is an excellent example of how we can all pool together our collective ideas to continue to make our Frugal community the best ever.

Good question Katie, does anyone know if it's possible to soften satin?
